सोनपुर  मेला भारत का सबसे प्रसिद्ध मेला 

बिहार के सोनपुर में सोनपुर में हर साल कार्तिक पूर्णिमा में लगने वाला विश्वप्रसिद्ध  मेला। 
यह एशिया का सबसे बड़ा पशु  मेला है ,एक समय  इस मेले में मध्य एशिया से करोबारी  आया करते थे। 
सोनपुर मेले में आज भी नौटंकी और नाच देखने के लिए भीड़ लगती है लेकिन एक ज़माने में यहाँ जंगि  हाथियों के बिक्री का सबसे बड़ा केंद्र था , मौर्य वंस के समय से ये मेला चलता आ रहा है है ,और कहा जाता है की चंद्र गुप्ता मौर्य अपने सेना के लिए यही से हाथियों की खरीदारी करते थे थे उसके अलावा मुग़ल सम्राट अकबर , और वीर कुंवर जैसे राजा महाराजाओ  ने यहाँ से हाथियों की खरीद की थी , 

इस मेले में हर तरह के पसु से लेकर  तरह तरह के  पक्षी  बेचे खरीदे जाते है    जो आपको कही और मिले न मिले सोनपुर में जरूर मिलेगा। 
यह मेला पवित्र गंगा और गंडक नदी  के संगम स्थल पर आयोजित किया जाता है और कार्तिक पूर्णिमा के मौके पर बड़े पैमाने पर श्रद्धालु नदी में डुबकी लगाने आते है जो इस दौरान मेले का हिस्सा  भी बनते है।  यहाँ लोकसंस्कृति से जुड़े कार्यक्रम आयोजित किये जाते है यही कारन है की लोग ज्यादा मात्रा में आते है। 
इसके अलावा मैजिक शो और लाइट इवेंट भी होते है पुरे दुनिया में इस तरह का मेला सिर्फ भारत में हे लगता है यह १ महीने तक चलता है। 

सोनपुर मेला का घोडा बाजार में पंजाब, हरयाणा ,राजस्थान, राज्यों से घोड़े लाये जाते है इसके अलावा बहरी देशो  से भी घोड़े बेचने के लिए लाये जाते है लेकिन पुरे घोड़े बाजार में बिहार टाइगर नाम के घोड़े को लेकर काफी प्रसिधा है 
टाइगर घंटो डांस कर दर्शको को झूमने पर मजबूर कर देता है इसे देखने के लिए लोगो की भीड़ लग जाती है इसके पैरो में भांडे घुंगरु की से लोग खींचे चले आते है, बिहार के टाइगर घोड़ो की किमत  5  लाख तक चली।  मेले के बारे में बातें करने पर लोग बताते हैं कि किसी दौर में मेले में सब कुछ बिकता था। यहां तक की गुलाम के तौर पर महिला और पुरुष भी बिकते थे। बदलते वक्त के साथ काफी कुछ बदला है लेकिन सोनपुर मेले का जलवा अभी भी बरकरार है।


कहा जाता  है की यहाँ पहले कन्याओ की भी बिक्री लगती थी जो अब प्रसासन  तरफ से बदित किया गया। 
खाने पिने से लेकर ज्वेलरी अलग अलग राज्यों से लाये जाते है।  पर्यटन विभाग के प्रधान सचिव बी़ प्रधान मानते हैं कि सोनपुर मेले में पशुओं की संख्या कम होना चिंता का विषय है. हालांकि वह जो कारण बताते हैं उस पर गौर करिये साहेब कहते हैं, पशुओं के प्रति लोगों की दिलचस्पी कम होती जा रही है. साहेब इस मेले में लोग मनोरंजन के लिए नहीं जानवर देखने ही आते हैं. मेले में हाथियों और दूसरे जानवरों की घटती संख्या दिलचस्पी की वजह से तो कम नहीं हो रही.
